Today I want to share important tips for foreigners visiting Japan for the first time. As someone who has lived in both Australia and Japan, I know how overwhelming culture shock can be!

今日は初めて日本を訪れる外国人の方に向けて、重要なアドバイスをシェアしたいと思います。オーストラリアと日本両方で生活した経験から、カルチャーショックがどれほど大変かよくわかります！

💰 1. Cash is Still King in Japan / 日本はまだ現金社会です

The Reality 現実:
Even in 2025, Japan is still very much a cash-based society!
2025年でも、日本はまだまだ現金ベースの社会です！

Many restaurants, especially smaller ones, only accept cash. Some temples and traditional shops don’t take cards at all.
多くのレストラン、特に小さなお店は現金のみです。お寺や伝統的なお店ではカードが使えないことも。

My Tip アドバイス：
Always carry at least ¥10,000-20,000 in cash with you. 7-Eleven ATMs are your best friend for withdrawing money!
常に1万円〜2万円の現金を持ち歩きましょう。お金を引き出すならセブンイレブンのATMが一番便利！

🚇 2. Train Etiquette is SERIOUS / 電車のマナーはとても重要

What You Need to Know 知っておくべきこと：
Japanese train etiquette might surprise you!
日本の電車のマナーは驚くかもしれません！

• Stay quiet: No loud phone calls or conversations
  静かに： 大声での電話や会話はNG
• Let people off first: Wait for passengers to exit before boarding
  降りる人優先： 乗る前に降りる人を待つ
• Stand on the left: On escalators (except in Osaka!)
  左側に立つ： エスカレーターで（大阪は例外！）
• Give up priority seats: For elderly, pregnant women, and disabled people
  優先席を譲る： 高齢者、妊婦、障害者の方に

My Experience: I was shocked how quiet Japanese trains are compared to Australia! It’s actually quite peaceful once you get used to it.
私の体験： オーストラリアと比べて日本の電車がどれほど静かかに驚きました！慣れると実はとても平和です。

🍜 3. Dining Culture Differences / 食事文化の違い

Surprising Facts 驚きの事実：
Japanese dining has unique rules!
日本の食事には独特のルールがあります！

• No tipping: Seriously, don’t tip! We don’t have tip culture.
  チップは不要： 本当に、チップは渡さないで！チップのカルチャーはありません。
• Slurping is OK: Especially with noodles – it’s actually polite!
  音を立てて食べてOK： 特に麺類では、実は礼儀正しい！
• Say “Itadakimasu”: Before eating (like saying grace)
  「いただきます」を言う： 食べる前に（お祈りのように）
• Finish your food: Leaving food can be seen as wasteful. Japanese people are trying to finish the meal usually not necessarily though.
  食べ物を残さない： 残すのは無駄遣いと見なされることも。残してもいいんですが、私たち日本人は残さないようにします。

🏠 4. The Shoe Rule is EVERYWHERE / 靴を脱ぐルールはどこでも

Taking off shoes is more common than you think!
靴を脱ぐ場面は思っているより多いです！

• Houses: Always remove shoes at the entrance
  家： 玄関で必ず靴を脱ぐ
• Some restaurants: Look for shoe racks at the entrance
  一部のレストラン： 入り口に靴置き場があるかチェック
• Temples and shrines: Shoes off before entering buildings
  寺社： 建物に入る前に靴を脱ぐ
• Some hotels: Traditional ryokan require shoe removal
  一部のホテル： 伝統的な旅館では靴を脱ぐ
• Changing rooms: Many require slippers
  更衣室： 多くの場所でスリッパが必要

Pro Tip: Wear socks without holes! You’ll be taking your shoes off more than you expect. 穴の開いていない靴下を履いて！思っているより靴を脱ぐ機会が多いです。

🗣️ 5. Language Barrier Reality / 言葉の壁の現実

The Truth 現実：:
English isn’t as widely spoken as you might expect.
英語は思っているほど広く話されていません。

But don’t worry!でも心配しないで！
Japanese people are incredibly helpful and patient. Many will try their best to help you even if they don’t speak English.
日本人はとても親切で忍耐強いです。英語を話せなくても、多くの人があなたを助けようとしてくれます。

🙏 6. Bowing Culture / お辞儀の文化

Simple Guide 簡単なガイド：
You don’t need to be perfect, but showing respect matters!
完璧である必要はありませんが、敬意を示すことが大切です！

• Casual bow: Slight nod for greetings
  軽いお辞儀： 挨拶に軽くうなずく
• Formal bow: 15-30 degree angle for thanks/apologies
  正式なお辞儀： お礼や謝罪で15〜30度の角度
• Deep bow: Only for very formal situations
  深いお辞儀： とても正式な場面でのみ

My Observation: Even a small bow shows you’re trying to respect Japanese culture, and people really appreciate it! 小さなお辞儀でも日本の文化を尊重しようとしていることが伝わり、人々は本当にそれを評価してくれます！

🚽 7. Toilet Culture Shock / トイレ文化ショック

Prepare yourself 心の準備を：:
Japanese toilets are… an experience! 😂
日本のトイレは…体験です！😂

• Heated seats: Yes, really!
  温かい便座： 本当です！
• Bidet functions: Buttons everywhere (be careful!)
  ウォシュレット機能： ボタンがたくさん（注意して！）
• Music buttons: To cover sounds
  音姫ボタン： 音を隠すため
• Toilet slippers: Special slippers just for the bathroom
  トイレスリッパ： トイレ専用のスリッパ

Funny Story面白い話:
When I was a child, I accidentally pressed the wrong button and got soaked! The toilet became a fountain! 🚿
私が子供の時、間違ったボタンを押してびしょ濡れになりました！トイレが噴水になった！🚿

Even as a Japanese person, these high-tech toilets can be confusing, so don’t feel bad if you have a similar experience! 😅
日本人でもこれらのハイテクトイレは混乱することがあるので、同じような体験をしても気にしないでください！😅

🎁 8. Gift Culture / お土産文化

Sweet Tradition素敵な伝統:
“Omiyage” (souvenirs) are a big deal in Japan!
「お土産」は日本では大きな意味を持ちます！

If Japanese friends help you during your trip, bringing small gifts from your home country is very appreciated. It doesn’t need to be expensive – it’s the thought that counts!
旅行中に日本の友達が助けてくれたら、母国からの小さなお土産はとても喜ばれます。高価である必要はありません – 気持ちが大切！

🌸 9. Seasonal Awareness / 季節への意識

Important:
Japan takes seasons VERY seriously!
日本は季節をとても重視します！

• Spring: Cherry blossom season (crowds everywhere!)
  春： 桜の季節（どこも人でいっぱい！）
• Summer: HOT and humid + festival season
• 夏： 暑くて湿気がすごい＋お祭りシーズン
• Autumn: Beautiful leaves + comfortable weather
  秋： 美しい紅葉＋快適な気候
• Winter: Cold but beautiful + illuminations
  冬： 寒いけど美しい＋イルミネーション

Pack accordingly! それに合わせて荷造りを！
Japanese weather can be extreme in summer and winter.
日本の気候は夏と冬は極端です。

❤️ 10. The Most Important Thing / 一番大切なこと

Remember:
Japanese people are incredibly kind and forgiving!
日本人はとても親切で寛容です！

Don’t stress too much about making mistakes. Most people understand you’re a visitor and will appreciate your efforts to be respectful, even if you get things wrong.
間違いを犯すことをあまり心配しないでください。多くの人はあなたが観光客だということを理解し、たとえ間違いを犯しても、敬意を払おうとする努力を評価してくれます。

Just be polite, quiet in public spaces, and show genuine interest in the culture. That’s all you need! 😊
公共の場では礼儀正しく、静かにして、文化に本当の興味を示すだけです。それだけで十分！😊

Japan might seem overwhelming at first, but it’s one of the most rewarding countries to visit. The attention to detail, hospitality, and unique culture will create memories you’ll treasure forever!
