Hi everyone, it’s maruö!
2025年11月に3年間のオーストラリア生活から日本に帰国しました。
I returned to Japan in November 2025 after 3 years living in Australia.
帰国してから感じた日本とオーストラリアの違いをまとめてみます。
Here are the differences I noticed between Japan and Australia after coming back.

- 8. 現金をまた使うようになったUsing cash again
- 9. 人の気遣いがすごいPeople are incredibly considerate

1. 電車の中が静かQuiet trains
オーストラリア
電車の中でみんな普通に話してる。電話もOKだし、音楽聞きながら歌ってる人もいる。
Australia
People talk normally on trains. Phone calls are fine, and some people even sing along to music.
日本
めちゃくちゃ静か。みんなスマホ見てるか寝てる。3年前は普通だったけど今は不思議な感じ。
Japan
Super quiet. Everyone’s on their phones or sleeping. It was normal 3 years ago but feels strange now.
2. コンビニの接客がすごいAmazing convenience store service
オーストラリア
“How are you?”って話しかけてくる。フレンドリーだけどカジュアル。
Australia
Staff say “How are you?” and chat with you. Friendly but casual.
日本
「いらっしゃいませ」「ありがとうございました」って言ってお辞儀もする。めちゃくちゃ丁寧。
Japan
They say “Irasshaimase” (welcome) and “Arigatou gozaimashita” (thank you) with bows. Incredibly polite.
3. 電車が時間通り Trains are exactly on time
オーストラリア
5分遅れは普通。10分遅れでも「まあそんなもんか」って感じ。
Australia
5-minute delays are normal. 10 minutes late is like “well, that’s how it goes.”
日本
1分遅れでもアナウンスで謝る。びっくりした。
Japan
They apologize over the announcement for even 1-minute delays. I was shocked.
4. ゴミ箱がないのに街がきれいClean streets without trash bins
オーストラリア
ゴミ箱いっぱいある。でも時々ゴミが落ちてる。
Australia
Trash bins everywhere. But sometimes there’s still litter on the streets.
日本
ゴミ箱ほとんどない。でもゴミも落ちてない。これすごくない？
Japan
Almost no trash bins. But no litter either. Isn’t this amazing?
5. ウォシュレットと暖かい便座Washlets and heated toilet seats
オーストラリア
普通のトイレ。ウォシュレットなんてないし、便座も冷たい。冬は特にきつい。
Australia
Regular toilets. No washlets at all, and cold toilet seats. Especially tough in winter.
日本
ウォシュレットがあって感動。しかも便座が暖かい！3年ぶりのこの快適さ。やっぱり日本のトイレは世界一。
Japan
Was moved to find washlets. And the toilet seats are warm! This comfort for the first time in 3 years. Japanese toilets really are the world’s best.
6. 挨拶が複雑Greetings are complex
オーストラリア
いつでも”Hi”でOK。シンプル。
Australia
“Hi” works anytime. Simple.
日本
「おはようございます」「こんにちは」「お疲れさま」って時間と場面で使い分け。3年のブランクで時々迷う。
Japan
“Ohayo gozaimasu,” “Konnichiwa,” “Otsukaresama” – different greetings for different times and situations. After 3 years away, sometimes I hesitate.
7. 食事の量とバランスFood portions and balance
オーストラリア
とにかくでかい。ハンバーガーが手で持てない。パスタも1.5人前くらい。
Australia
Everything’s huge. Can’t even hold the burgers with your hands. Pasta servings are like 1.5 portions.
日本
定食のバランスがちょうどいい。ご飯、味噌汁、おかず、漬物。食べた後の満足感が違う。
Japan
Set meal balance is just right. Rice, miso soup, main dish, pickles. The satisfaction after eating is different.
8. 現金をまた使うようになったUsing cash again
オーストラリア
ほぼ完全キャッシュレス。コーヒー1杯でもカード。
Australia
Almost completely cashless. Even one coffee with a card.
日本
まだ現金のところが多い。ATMで久しぶりに現金引き出した。硬貨を触るのが懐かしい。
Japan
Still many cash-only places. Withdrew cash from ATM for the first time in ages. Felt nostalgic touching coins.
9. 人の気遣いがすごいPeople are incredibly considerate
オーストラリア
優しいけどストレート。困ってたら声かけてくれる。
Australia
Kind but direct. They’ll speak up if you’re in trouble.
日本
言われる前に気づいて配慮してくれる。エレベーターのボタン押してくれたり、自然に荷物をよけてくれたり。
Japan
They notice and help before you even ask. Like pressing elevator buttons or naturally moving bags out of the way.
10. 季節がある！There are actual seasons!
オーストラリア（QLD）
基本的に暖かい。季節の変化があまりない。
Australia (QLD)
Basically warm. Not much seasonal change.
日本
11月の紅葉がきれい！3年ぶりに季節の変化を感じた。やっぱり四季っていいな。
Japan
November autumn leaves are beautiful! Felt seasonal change for the first time in 3 years. Four seasons really are nice.
まとめSummary
3年間オーストラリアにいて改めて気づいた日本のいいところがたくさんありました。
After 3 years in Australia, I rediscovered many great things about Japan.
でもオーストラリアのゆるい感じも好きだったし、どっちもいいところがある。
But I also loved Australia’s relaxed vibe – both countries have their good points.
これから日本に来る外国人の人たちに、日本の文化を理解してもらえるような記事も書いていきたいと思います！
